HOLY DOOR
The Holy Door is a walled door to the basilica and can only be opened on jubilee days. The first holy door created in the history of Christianity was the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila, central Italy. The church was founded in 1288 and was the site where Pope Celestine V was crowned pope on 29 August 1294, and is considered the maximum expression of Abruzzo architecture, as well as a symbol of the city, and was declared a national monument in 1902.

The four main basilicas of Rome have holy doors: St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican (the work of the sculptor Vico Consorti, created in Florence by Ferdinando Marinelli), St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Paul outside the Walls (by sculptor Antonio Maraini), Basilica of St. John Lateran (by sculptor Floriano Bodini), and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (by Bolognese sculptor Luigi Enzo Mattei).

Various churches which are traditionally pilgrimage destinations also have holy doors authorized by the Pope making it possible to receive plenary indulgences: for example the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela or the basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Atri and the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Quebec. In India, the Holy Doors at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, in New Delhi, opened for the first time on 12 December 2015 to coincide with the start of the Jubilee of Mercy.

Also on the occasion of the Extraordinary Jubilee with the theme of Mercy from 2015 to 2016, Pope Francis permitted the opening of the Holy Door also in other cathedrals.

The holy door is an image of Christ, a place of transit to goodness (John 10, 9; 10, 1; Matthew 16, 19). The door of jubilee is Christ himself who introduces us to the heavenly city, which forgives sins and forgives punishment. In the Old Testament book of Ezekiel (46, 1-3) it is stated that doors are places through which humans can meet God.

The most famous jubilee ritual is the opening of the door. The Rite of the Holy Door symbolically expresses the concept that, during the Jubilee, the faithful are offered an “extraordinary path” to salvation.

The official opening of the Jubilee Year occurred with the opening of the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica. The basilica’s other holy doors were opened in the following days. In the past, part of the sacred door, namely the cement wall, was dismantled before the celebration, leaving behind a diaphragm that the Pope broke with a hammer; then workers completed the demolition. However, on the occasion of the jubilee in 2000, Pope John Paul II introduced a simpler and quicker rite (also because, when on the jubilee of 1975 Pope Paul VI broke the remaining diaphragm of the wall, he was crushed by heavy debris that fell to the ground , not far from him).

After the above incident, the cement wall was then dismantled first, leaving only a closed door which was opened by the Pope by pushing the door. The holy doors remain open (apart from the normal closing at night) until the end of the Holy Year (a full year) and are then closed again with a layer of cement wall.
